Spring has officially arrived in Iowa and the sporadic and often unpredictable weather is poking its head through. We were fortunate enough to have a relatively mild winter in 2019 and the early part of this year (as far as the weather goes), but it doesn’t mean your building didn’t take a beating. During this time of drastic temperature swings, high winds, and heavy rainfall, it’s imperative that your commercial building’s roof is properly examined and cleaned off.

Clean Debris From Your Building’s Roof

When cold, snowy weather forces us to stay inside during the winter months, it allows roofs to accumulate all kinds of debris over time. Anything from tree branches to trash can potentially poke holes in the membrane of your commercial roof. It is important that you clean downspouts and gutters of any sort of leaves, twigs, or debris that might have found a way in there over the winter. Puddling water on your roof adds unnecessary weight to the structure of your building. Did you know just one gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs? Multiply that by hundreds to thousands of gallons and you could be looking at some serious damage to your building over time.

Determine Risk Factors for Your Commercial Roof

Once you have removed any leftover debris from your roof, look beyond your building’s roof to see what other dangers could threaten it. Are there tree branches hanging over your roof or close by that could be knocked off when a large storm comes by? If so, trim any invasive branches or relocate any trees that are too close to your roof.

Look Inside Your Building for Signs of Damage

Sometimes the interior of your building can provide you with the insight that your commercial or industrial roof has damage. Take a look around the building and inspect if any walls, ceiling tiles, or miscellaneous areas around the office have discoloration to them. If you see discoloration within your building’s structure, especially along areas of drywall and ceiling tiles, check to see if they are damp or wet by gently touching the surface area. However, if you see mold buildup occurring, do not touch the exposed area. In the event that your roof has a leak, report a leak with us to have it quickly mitigated.
